Arranging tips
- Use shrubs as the backbone of the border, with perennials and flowering plants in front.
- Repeat a few varieties rather than using many different single specimens.
- Mix flowering and evergreen varieties for interest in every season.
Position & placement
- Dig a generous planting hole, at least twice as wide as the root ball.
- Mix compost or garden soil into the excavated soil for a good start.
- Give berry-bearing varieties enough space; birds only come once the shrub is well established.
Care tips
- Prune flowering shrubs just after flowering, not before, or you’ll cut off the buds.
- Give new plantings extra water for the first two years, especially in dry spells.
- An annual dressing of garden manure in spring keeps shrubs vigorous and flowering abundantly.
