Practical

Arranging, positioning & care

Practical tips to help you get the most out of your choice.

Arranging tips

  • Use a decorative pot with an inner-pot system: the nursery pot stays out of sight and doesn’t need to be removed.
  • Let the pot grow with a large plant; a pot that is too small slows growth.
  • Combine materials deliberately: terracotta and wicker look warm, concrete and ceramics look sleek.

Position & placement

  • Outdoors, always choose a frost-resistant pot; not every material survives the winter.
  • Make sure there is a drainage hole, or put a layer of clay pebbles in the bottom if there isn’t one.
  • A light-coloured pot in full sun heats up faster; take that into account when choosing plants.

Care tips

  • Check self-watering pots regularly; too much water in the reservoir can also cause root rot.
  • Empty and clean outdoor pots in autumn if you are storing them indoors.
  • Terracotta is porous and can crack in frost if it is full of water, so keep it dry and sheltered in winter.
