Practical

Arranging, positioning & care

Practical tips to help you get the most out of your choice.

Arranging tips

  • Choose the feed to suit the type of plant; a houseplant has different needs from a border or lawn.
  • Seed and cutting compost is deliberately low in nutrients, which is exactly right for young roots.
  • Using a pot without a drainage hole? Then choose a waterproof potting compost that regulates moisture better.

Position & placement

  • Mix planting soil into the planting hole to give new plants a better start.
  • Acid-loving plants such as rhododendron and hydrangea need special, acidic planting soil.
  • Refresh the potting compost in permanent planters and tubs at least once a year.

Care tips

  • Feed more often during the growing season (spring–summer); during winter rest hardly or not at all.
  • With a pest or disease, first look at the cause; there is a targeted, often organic solution for almost every problem.
  • Store potting compost and fertiliser in a dry, dark place; it keeps longer.
