Practical

Arranging, positioning & care

Practical tips to help you get the most out of your choice.

Arranging tips

  • Use a hedge as a green frame around the garden or to separate different parts of the garden.
  • Combine different heights for a layered, less flat boundary.
  • A single conifer as an accent nicely breaks up a formal border.

Position & placement

  • Most hedging plants grow well in sun to partial shade.
  • Make sure the soil drains well; few varieties tolerate permanently wet roots.
  • When planting, take the final width of the mature hedge into account.

Care tips

  • Trim most hedges once or twice a year, usually around June and late August.
  • Give a young hedge extra water during dry spells in its first year.
  • Deciduous hedges such as beech and hornbeam often keep their dried leaves all winter, so the hedge remains a dense screen in winter too.
