Practical

Arranging, positioning & care

Practical tips to help you get the most out of your choice.

Arranging tips

  • Place a specimen tree where it can be seen clearly from the house or patio.
  • When planting, take the final size into account; young trees often grow bigger than expected.
  • An espalier or roof-trained tree needs formative pruning every year; ask us about the best time for your variety.

Position & placement

  • Dig a generous planting hole, at least twice as wide as the root ball.
  • Mix compost or planting soil into the excavated soil for a good start.
  • Keep a suitable distance from buildings, cables and pipes, including underground ones.

Care tips

  • Give new plantings extra water for the first two years, especially in dry spells.
  • Prune at the right time for the variety; cover large pruning wounds to protect against disease.
  • Protect sensitive young plantings in winter with a layer of mulch around the base.
