Practical

Arranging, positioning & care

Practical tips to help you get the most out of your choice.

Arranging tips

  • Work with differences in height: tall plants at the back of the border, low plants at the front.
  • Plant in groups of at least 3 to 5 of the same variety for a natural, calm look; more is always better.
  • Choose plants with different flowering times, so the garden keeps its colour all season.
  • Combine flowering plants with evergreens as a permanent base; then the border looks full in winter too.

Position & placement

  • Check whether each variety needs sun, partial shade or shade before planting.
  • Take the soil type into account: some plants like it moist, others need good drainage.
  • Give new plants enough room to grow to their mature size.

Care tips

  • Give newly planted plants extra water for the first few weeks, even if it rains.
  • Remove faded flowers for longer, more abundant flowering.
  • Spread bark or wood chips between the plants every year: it retains moisture and suppresses weeds.
  • Divide large, older perennials every few years to give them new vigour.
